Those about to take a driving test in the UK.

For those who are about to take their driving test in the UK, it is important to understand what the DVSA tests entail. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) carries out both the theory and practical tests, which measure whether or not an individual has the knowledge and skills required for safe driving. Let’s dive into some of the details surrounding these tests.

The Theory Test  The theory test is a computer-based exam that consists of two parts – multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test. To pass this part of the assessment, candidates must score a minimum of 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice questions and 44 out of 75 on the hazard perception section. It is recommended that individuals purchase an official DVSA theory test kit, which contains everything needed to prepare for this portion of their assessment. This includes an online service, official question bank as well as practice hazard perception videos. The practical test looks at how safely an individual can drive on public roads. The exam lasts approximately 40 minutes, during which time they are required to demonstrate their ability to follow directions from a sat nav system and complete certain maneuvers correctly such as parallel parking or reversing around a corner. Candidates must also show that they can follow traffic signs correctly, use their mirrors properly and maintain control over their vehicle at all times. To pass this part of their assessment, they must have no more than 15 minor faults throughout their entire journey.

Before taking either part of the DVSA tests, it is important for candidates to thoroughly read through all of the rules outlined in The Highway Code as well as familiarize themselves with any additional materials provided by DVSA in order to increase their chances of success. Additionally, they should use official practice material such as the official question bank and practice hazard perception videos to get used to what will be expected on each part of their assessment. With enough preparation and dedication, anyone can gain their license with flying colors! Good luck!
